2009, December 20:
Chembe Ventures launches Urban
Security Competition 2010
In association with Vodafone, on December 20th, Chembe Ventures
launched Chembe Urban Security Competition 2010 on the Betavine
Social Exchange.
The US $ 5,000 competition encourages innovative mobile
solutions to help residents of low-income, densely populated
urban areas improve their personal security.
Entries must be designed for deployment in one of the following
countries: Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa or Tanzania,
and should provide solutions under one or more of these
headings:
- early warning notifications of criminal activity, violence
or other security threats
- assistance for families, communities at risk of crime
- reducing crime, preventing the spread of violence
- location, identification and assistance of victims of
violence or crime
We know there is no shortage of mobile programming talent
in East and Southern Africa, and we would love to see as
many entries as possible.
Individuals, informal groups, companies and organisations
are free to enter; however, each entry must include at least
one local partner. This means that if the pilot is to be
deployed in Kibera, Nairobi, for example, we would expect
the entry to be submitted by a Kenyan developer, or that
a Kenyan partner play a central role in either the design,
development or pilot testing of the application. All you
have to do to enter is upload a prototype or application
design on the Betavine Social Exchange.
Chembe is also offering a potential further US $5,000 or
more of investment and pilot testing capital to the winning
team or individual.
